DENVER – The ACLU of Colorado today announced the selection of C. Ray Drew as its executive director.
"Civil liberties are the lifeblood of a healthy democracy,” Drew said. “The ACLU of Colorado has been a steady champion of liberty for over a half-century. I’m honored to join their effort to defend Coloradans’ fundamental rights and to ensure equality for all under the law.

Drew’s proven record of effective leadership uniquely positions him to continue the organization’s 58-year history of defending and expanding civil liberties and civil rights for all Coloradans. Over the past decade he has served as the executive director of two organizations devoted to the advancement of LGBT rights: the Family Equality Council, a nationwide advocacy organization for LGBT parents, and most recently, South Carolina Equality. He also ran a political and nonprofit consulting firm.

"Nobody is more excited than I am to welcome Ray into the ACLU family," said Bruce Sattler, who has served as the ACLU’s temporary executive director since August 2009. "He is a dynamic leader who will bring a passionate voice to the fight for civil liberties in Colorado and provide inspired leadership to our dedicated and talented staff.”

Drew will assume his role as executive director beginning March 1. He will also attend our 2010 Annual Members Meeting this Saturday, February 20, at 6:00 p.m. at University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law. The meeting features ACLU National Legal Director Steven Shapiro, who will discuss the state of civil liberties after one year of President Obama’s administration.

The ACLU is a nationwide, non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to defending and preserving the principles of the Bill of Rights through litigation, advocacy and public education.  The ACLU Foundation of Colorado works to protect the rights of all Coloradans.
