December 15, 2008 - ACLU applauds the city of Aurora's consideration of a a proposal to grant same-sex spouses of city staffers the same benefits heterosexual spouses receive. The city council will decide on the domestic partner benefits proposal at its Dec. 15th meeting. Read the Aurora Sentinel article here.
August 21, 2008- ACLU responds to DPD bulletin asking first responders to look for "stockpiles" of materials that could be used by protestors
The ACLU of Colorado responded to a Denver Police Dept. bulletin that asks all law enforcment and fire department personnel to be on the lookout for, and to report “stockpiles and caches of supplies” that that could be used by “violent demonstrators” during the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
August 11, 2008- ACLU sues Denver on behalf of five innocent victims of "mistaken identity" arrests
On behalf of five clients, the ACLU of Colorado filed suit today against the City and County of Denver and various Denver law enforcement officers, charging that in each case, “recklessly sloppy police work” resulted in the innocent plaintiff’s arrest and imprisonment—as long as 26 days in one case—for crimes with which they had no connection whatsoever.
May 28, 2008- ACLU sues Denver seeking disclosure of DNC-related purchases of police equipment
Invoking Colorado’s open records laws, the ACLU of Colorado filed suit today in Denver District Court, asking that Denver be ordered to disclose records related to budgeting for and purchase of police equipment dating from January 2007, when Denver was selected as the host city for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
May 23, 2008- In ACLU lawsuit regarding First Amendment activity during DNC, parties agree on some issues; additional issues remain for federal court resolutions
Attorneys representing Denver and the Secret Service, and ACLU of Colorado attorneys filed documents in federal district court indicating that they had reached agreement on some of the issues raised in an ACLU lawsuit filed May 1 that seeks to protect the right of free expression during DNC.
May 22, 2008- ACLU challenges Town of Parker’s ban on display of American flags at charity fundraising event for military families
Acting on behalf of an organization planning a benefit to raise money for the families of active military personnel, the ACLU of Colorado today challenged the Town of Parker’s ban on the display of banners and American flags during the special event planned for June 4 at a privately owned restaurant.
May 19, 2008- ACLU Sues Denver for Disclosure of City Jail Policies and Procedures in Advance of Democratic National Convention
The ACLU of Colorado announced today that it had filed suit against Denver in state district court seeking disclosure of the policy and procedure manual that governs the processing and treatment of detainees at Denver’s downtown city jail, known as the Pre-Arraignment Detention Facility, or PADF.
May 2, 2008- ACLU sues Denver and Secret Service to protect First Amendment rights during 2008 Democratic National Convention
The ACLU of Colorado announced today that it had filed suit in federal court on behalf of 12 advocacy organizations against the United States Secret Service and the City and County of Denver, seeking to protect the right to engage in peaceful marches, demonstrations, and assemblies during the Democratic National Conventionthis coming August.
April 21, 2008- ACLU applauds Boulder Valley School District’s decision to limit searches of students’ cell phone text messages
The ACLU of Colorado announced today that it welcomes a decision of the Boulder Valley School District (“BVSD”) to limit searches of students’ cell phone text messages, an issue the ACLU raised in a letter made public in October, 2007.
March 17, 2008- Settlement reached in civil rights lawsuit over flashlight beating by former Colorado Springs police officer
The ACLU of Colorado reached an agreement with the City of Colorado Springs to resolve a 2007 federal civil rights lawsuit that alleged that a Springs police officer beat the ACLU’s client, Delvikio Faulkner, multiple times in the head with a heavy-duty police flashlight after a traffic stop in July, 2005.
March 14, 2008- Federal court orders class action status in ACLU case on behalf of prisoners in Garfield County Jail
Federal district court judge Wiley Y. Daniel issued a 43-page opinion that certifies, as a class action, a2006 ACLU lawsuit filed on behalf of prisoners in the Garfield County Jail in Glenwood Springs.
March 5, 2008- “ACLU announces settlement of 4-year-old lawsuit over Colorado regulations threatening the public’s right to free speech at the State Capitol”
In a letter sent to Denver city officials, the ACLU of Colorado detailed “serious constitutional problems” with the City’s proposed laws for parade and park permits.
